French verb conjugation
A French verb changes with who acts and with when. This page explains the mechanics, then links to the full tables of 51 common verbs. Each table shows the auxiliary, greys the letters you write and do not say, and comes with real sentences for every tense.

Every tense has six persons, and the spelling gives each one its ending. The ear gets less. Take parler in the present: six written forms, 3 spoken ones. 4 of the six sound exactly alike, because the letters that tell them apart are silent.

That is the reason the tables on this site grey the silent letters and set the ending in bold. Learn the spelling for writing and the sound for speaking: they are two different lists, and the second one is shorter.
Two auxiliaries
Compound tenses are an auxiliary plus the past participle. Most verbs take avoir: j'ai mangé. A small group, mostly verbs of movement and of change of state, takes être: je suis venu.
The choice has a consequence you can see. With être, the participle agrees with the subject: elle est venue, elles sont venues. Among the verbs on this site, 6 work this way: aller, devenir, partir, s'asseoir, sortir, venir.
The tenses, in the order you need them
French grammar books list around twenty tenses. Conversation runs on the first few below; the literary ones matter for reading. The example is faire, first person.
