How to use it

The phrase is built on tu, the form French keeps for people who are close. There is no everyday version of it in vous: a declaration of love is by nature addressed to someone you call tu.

The verb behind it means both to love and to like, and French sorts the two out with what surrounds the verb. Said bare, to a person, it means love. That is why the phrase is short and why it carries so much.

Watch out

Adding one small word takes the love out. Je t'aime bien means I like you, as a friend: warmer than it sounds in English, and nothing more. Learners add the word to sound kinder and end up saying less. The third exchange shows it used on purpose.
