How to say please in French
Please in French is s'il vous plaît when you say vous to the person, and s'il te plaît when you say tu. The phrase literally means if it pleases you, and the word for you inside it has to match the rest of your sentence.
The ways to say it
How to use it
The two exchanges below are the same request made twice: once to a friend, once to a stranger. Everything changes together. The verb takes its tu form or its vous form, please follows, and even the answer switches. French does not let you mix the two in one sentence.
The phrase usually closes the request, after a comma, as in both examples. In a shop or a restaurant it is not optional: a request without it sounds like an order.
Watch out
Saying s'il te plaît to a stranger is the classic slip. It is not rude in intent, but it treats an adult you do not know as a friend or a child. With anyone you have not agreed to call tu, the phrase is s'il vous plaît.
In a real conversation
Each exchange is a line and its reply. Greyed letters are written and not pronounced. A tie marks a liaison, with the sound you hear under it. A label under a verb names its tense when it is not the present.
