How to say merry Christmas in French
Merry Christmas in French is joyeux Noël. It suits everyone, from a parent to a shopkeeper, and the usual reply sends it straight back.
The ways to say it
How to use it
In the first exchange below a daughter says it to her father with a present in hand, and he returns it with to you too. In the second, a speaker builds a full sentence around it for someone they call vous: I wish you a merry Christmas. Both are everyday French.
French writes the name of the holiday with a capital letter and two dots over its second vowel. The dots mean that the two vowels are pronounced separately.
Watch out
The last letter of the first word of joyeux Noël is silent. It stays silent here because the next word starts with a consonant; it is greyed in the examples.
In a real conversation
Each exchange is a line and its reply. Greyed letters are written and not pronounced. A tie marks a liaison, with the sound you hear under it. A label under a verb names its tense when it is not the present.
