Thank you in French is merci. It works with everyone, a friend or a stranger, because the word itself never changes: the politeness lives in the rest of the sentence. To thank someone warmly, say merci beaucoup.

How to use it

French makes you pick a small word after merci, and the pick depends on what comes next. Thank someone for a thing with merci pour: a gift, their help, the flowers. Thank someone for doing something with merci de and a verb, as in the third exchange below, where a friend is thanked for coming quickly.

Watch the replies in the exchanges. The shopkeeper and the friend give the same answer in two forms, one for vous and one for tu. The form you get back tells you how the other person sees the two of you.

Watch out

The last letter of merci beaucoup is silent. It is greyed in the examples below, like every letter French writes and does not say. Pronounce it and the phrase stops sounding French.
