Russian cursive (пропись) is the connected handwriting every Russian learns at school and writes by default. Its fame is earned: т turns into m, и turns into u, д turns into g, and a word like лишишь melts into a row of identical humps. The hump problem, demonstrated
The letters и, ш, л and м are all built from the same little humps, connected. Put a few of them in a row and the word becomes a picket fence: the three specimens above are a real verb (you will deprive), a chinchilla, and a million.
Russians read these effortlessly, the way you read terrible English handwriting: by word shape and context, not letter by letter. That skill comes with exposure, and nobody sounds out humps one at a time.

Is all Russian handwriting in cursive?
By default, yes. Cursive is what school drills for years, so when Russians write by hand, connected cursive is what comes out; block printing reads as childish or as filling in a form. A handwritten note, a doctor's scrawl, a teacher's blackboard: all cursive.
The honest counterweight: daily life is typed now. Messages, documents and the entire internet reach you in print letterforms, so the survival skill is reading cursive when it appears, not producing calligraphy yourself.
How to actually read it
Anchor on the letters that barely change: а, о, к, е and most capitals keep their printed logic. They chop a word into segments, and the hump clusters between anchors are usually short enough to resolve.
Use the writers' own disambiguation marks: many Russians draw a small bar above т and a small line below ш, precisely because the two are hump-twins. When you see an overline or underline in handwriting, it is not decoration; it is a courtesy.
Read words, not letters. You already know привет and спасибо as shapes; cursive reading is the same skill pointed at a slantier font. Context does most of the work, which is why vocabulary depth, not letterform drilling, is what unlocks handwriting.
Do you need to write it?
Reading first, honestly. Unless you are taking classes or exams in Russia, nobody will hand you a dictation; a foreigner printing block letters surprises no one. Learn to read cursive early, and let writing it stay optional.
If you do want to write, the school пропись worksheets Russians use in first grade are the real curriculum: letter by letter, with connection strokes. An hour a week for a month covers the alphabet.

Is all Russian handwriting in cursive?
By default yes: school drills cursive for years, and block printing by an adult reads as odd or form-filling. But most Russian you will ever see is typed, in print letterforms. Read cursive; produce whatever is comfortable.
How do Russians read it at all?
By word shape and context, exactly the way you read messy English handwriting. Nobody parses the humps letter by letter; the brain recognizes whole words, and ambiguous clusters are resolved by what the sentence must mean.
Is Russian cursive real, or an internet joke?
Both. The memes are real photographs of real handwriting, and лишишь really does become a row of humps. It is also perfectly functional: a hundred and forty million people read and write it daily without noticing anything funny.
How do I learn to write Russian cursive?
The same way Russian first-graders do: пропись worksheets, which trace each letter with its entry and exit strokes. The alphabet takes a few focused hours; connected fluency takes a few weeks of casual practice. Start after you read print comfortably, not before.
Why does т look like m and и look like u?
The cursive shapes descend from older longhand traditions, not from the printed letters. The pairs to memorize are т as m, и as u, д as g, п as n, ч as r and з as the digit 3; the table above marks every shape-shifter.
Do fonts show real Russian cursive?
Italic and handwriting fonts approximate it: even standard italics turn printed т into an m-shape, which is why book italics already look half-cursive. True пропись connects every letter and slants consistently; this page uses a handwriting font to get close, and says so.
