What does spasibo mean?
Спасибо is the Russian thank you, at every register from shops to friends. It began life as the blessing спаси Бог, God save you, worn down by centuries of gratitude into a single word.

It scales easily: большое спасибо is a big thank you, спасибо огромное an enormous one, and a bare спасибо covers everything from a held door to a favor. The standard reply is пожалуйста, the same word that means please, doing double duty as you're welcome.
The etymology is not trivia; it explains a real usage detail. Because спасибо was once a blessing, the older generation sometimes answers charity with it instead of requesting, and the fossil phrase спасибо в карман не положишь (you cannot put a thank-you in your pocket) jokes about gratitude as currency.
The word as a word
Frozen and invariable: спасибо never declines. What it governs does: thanking someone FOR something takes за + accusative (спасибо за помощь, thanks for the help), and the thanked person stands in the dative (спасибо тебе).
Watch out
The pronunciation hides two traps: the stress is on the middle syllable (spa-SI-ba), and the final о reduces to a: never spa-SI-bo with a full o. Say it with the reduction and you instantly sound less like a phrasebook.

Does spasibo really mean God save?
Historically yes: it contracted from спаси Бог (may God save you), the way English goodbye compressed God be with you. Modern speakers no more hear the blessing than English speakers hear theirs; it is simply thank you.
How do Russians answer spasibo?
Пожалуйста is the standard you're welcome; не за что (it was nothing) is the casual shrug. Among friends you will also hear the borrowed окей-level short forms, but пожалуйста is never wrong.
