Thank you in Russian

Thank you in Russian is спасибо (spasibo), and it works in every situation, formal or informal. To strengthen it, say большое спасибо (big thank you) or спасибо огромное (enormous thank you).

How to use it

Спасибо began life as the phrase спаси Бог, God save you, worn down by centuries of use. That is why it does not conjugate or agree with anything: it is a fossil, and you can drop it anywhere in a sentence.

The standard replies are пожалуйста (you're welcome), не за что (it was nothing) and the warmer на здоровье, mostly after food. Pick one; silence after a spasibo feels abrupt in Russian.
