How to use it

This is a parting phrase for the end of the evening, not an evening greeting: arriving at 21:00 you say добрый вечер, leaving to sleep you say спокойной ночи.

The invisible желаю (I wish) explains a whole family of phrases: счастливого пути (safe travels), удачи (good luck), всего хорошего (all the best). All genitive, all missing the same verb.
