Goodbye in Russian

Goodbye in Russian is до свидания (do svidaniya) in formal situations and пока (poka) with friends. До свидания literally means until the meeting, a promise to meet again.

How to use it

The до + genitive pattern generates goodbyes on demand: до понедельника (see you Monday), до вечера (see you tonight). Learn the pattern once and every parting phrase comes free.

Пока doubles happily (пока-пока), especially on the phone. Note the stress: poKA. First-syllable stress turns it into the word for 'for now / while', which is a different word doing a different job.
