I miss you in Russian

I miss you in Russian is я скучаю по тебе (ya skuchayu po tebe): literally I am bored along you, with the missed person in the dative after по. Warmer still is мне тебя не хватает: to me, you are not enough.

How to use it

The verb скучать needs its preposition: missing someone is скучать по plus the dative (по тебе, по маме, по дому, for home). Dropping the по, as English word order tempts, breaks the sentence.

Соскучился adds the flavour of accumulated missing: said on reunion (как я соскучился!, how I missed you!). Being a past form, it agrees with the speaker: a man says соскучился, a woman соскучилась.

Watch out

Мне тебя не хватает flips the grammar like ты мне нравишься does: the misser is dative (мне) and the missed one genitive (тебя). Translating word for word from English produces the reverse of the intended sentence.
