Hi in Russian

Hi in Russian is привет (privet): the standard greeting for friends, family and anyone you address as ты. Past it stretches a whole casual spectrum, from the matey здорово to the borrowed хай, but привет is the one that works everywhere informal.

How to use it

Привет goes exactly as far as ты does: friends, family, classmates, children, anyone who has offered you the informal you. The moment a stranger, an official or an elder is involved, the greeting switches to здравствуйте along with the pronoun; the two boundaries always move together.

In messages the casual register loosens further: приветик softens, хай is quick thumbs-up energy, and здорово arrives with how-are-things energy, usually as здорово, как сам? Nobody will mind if you never use them; everybody will notice if you use them with the wrong person.

Watch out

Здорово (hi) and здорово (great, awesome) are spelled identically; only the stress tells them apart. Greet with zdorOvo, admire with zdOrovo. Swap the stress and you swap the meaning, which is exactly why NuanceDeck marks it on every word.
