Good evening in Russian

Good evening in Russian is добрый вечер (dobry vecher), the greeting for roughly after five or six in the afternoon. It greets people on arrival; the night phrase спокойной ночи is a farewell before sleep, never a hello.

How to use it

The Russian day ladder runs доброе утро until about noon, добрый день through the afternoon, добрый вечер from early evening. The adjective agrees with the noun: neuter утро takes доброе, masculine день and вечер take добрый.

All three work only on arrival. When leaving in the evening you say до свидания as usual, and спокойной ночи only to someone heading to bed.

Watch out

Спокойной ночи is a bedtime farewell, not a greeting: opening a conversation with it reads like wishing someone asleep. Arriving at nine in the evening, the greeting is still добрый вечер.
